Motorola was the first that allowed users to familiarize themselves with the “pure” Android, which does not fit with the brand shells. MOTO X of 2nd generation (2014), which will be discussed in this review, is a kind of refinement of previous models.
For all characteristics this is a thoroughbred Nexus (although it is not positioned so at the market). Many experts have already dubbed this model as the best Android-device of 2014/15. In addition to unusual design, the phone is equipped with powerful hardware. Functionality and a certain kind of personality do MOTO X as a kind of specific gadget that certainly is not suitable for everyone. “Correct” smartphone has a very specific collective image – geometry, materials and colors. Our hero is, to put it mildly, does not fit into the framework of the overall presentation. Read the review and make your own conclusions.
Mass psychology has its own characteristics, and any one of us has his own ideas. When the crowd is offered to think about the tree, the imagination of each draw a completely different picture. This example perfectly illustrates how different are our ideas about the ideal phone. A few years ago this idea was adopted by Motorola developers. As a result, there appeared an incredible and unique service Moto Maker. It’s kind of designer design for the phone: the buyer, in the truest sense of the word, assembles his phone by himself. Starting from the color and design of the case, and ending with the wallpaper. The company is individually suited to the creation of each of his devices. Good advertising stunt. Devices in standard specification are also available, as the above-mentioned service is not available in all countries.
What is a smartphone? Body, encased in a metal frame, the screen is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protective glass (an oleophobic coating is also available).
The back cover was feature of the series. It can be made from natural materials (wood, bamboo, leather), or of plastics of any of the proposed hue (warm, cool or neutral palette). Such an unexpected stylistic approach will not please everyone. Not everyone wants go with the same type of thin glossy Phablet. If you like to attract the attention of others – you cannot find any better assist than MOTO X.
The phone has the following dimensions and weights indicators: 144 g weight and 14.1×7.2×1 cm size. MOTO ideal to lie in the palm.
The phone is equipped with earpiece and three noise-canceling microphones. The front panel has a 2-megapixel camera.
Connectors and Control Elements
On the upper side there is a mini-jack for standard form (3.5 mm) headphones and a slot for SIM-card of nano format.
On the opposite edge there is located a microUSB-socket (2.0).
On the right are the power button and volume rocker.
Due to the hydrophobic nanocoating, MOTO X has an additional protection in the event of certain incidents. It is unlikely that the device will be able to function well after a full immersion, but minor soakage will not damage it.
Manufacturer, positioning it as a flagship model, is always trying to equip it with best components. But this is not always possible. To date, the best displays are presented by Samsung. So far, Its SuperAMOLED is not available to other companies, which is quite logical. And so the weak point of all devices is displays. An exception may be own production thereof. But, unfortunately, Motorola is not engaged in this, and therefore it should be satisfied with the best available in the public domain.
MOTO X is equipped with usual AMOLED-5.7” display with the 1440 x 2560 pixels resolution. The density is quite high – 520 ppi. There is an automatic brightness control.
As in all other smartphones running on Android 5.0 and higher, MOTO X has a feature Ambient Display (incoming notification / message are displayed only on the part of the screen).
It must be said in this review about several standard indicators: viewing angles are big and the colors are slightly inverted.
Performance and the Phone Memory
Buyers have three options available with internal memory of 16, 32 and 64 GB. The is no possibility to install a memory card. 2 GB RAM is enough a smartphone performance.
In MOTO X there is installed Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 system-on-chip. This 4-core chipset 2.5 GHz. Smartphone is equipped with Adreno 330 graphical editor. At benchmarks the results are encouraging.
A lot has been already said in this review about the software. As well, all over the Internet there is much useful information. We will only say one thing: to work with “pure» Android 5.0 – it’s not the same as working with the adapted Android 5.0.
MOTO X is equipped by SONY (IMX135) camera module. So, no need to talk about its high quality of work. We will only say one thing: many flagships of recent years have been equipped like this. The camera resolution is 21 MP, f 2/25, but no optical stabilization. There is a dual LED flash.
With enough light the quality of the pictures is higher than average. For some users automatic autofocus can be not convenient.
A nice feature is the launch of the application: just turn it to hand to turn the camera. The entire screen is the viewfinder. Both the main and front camera (2 megapixel) capable of recording videos in FullHD.
Rapid discharge of the battery is the scourge of all Android-devices. MOTO X is equipped with lithium-ion 2300 mAh battery. The manufacturer declares that the battery is enough for 24 hours of mixed use. With an average load, the device will be surely enough for 8 hours.
We cannot ignore in this review Quick Charge technology. One hour of charging will fill the battery on 100%. However, quick battery charger is not included in the phone set, and you should buy it separately.
